Hildegard of Bingen & the Billingsgate trumpet
The church at Alderton houses a unique wooden 13th-century effigy of alderman and parliamentarian William de Combemartin. This effigy inspires Fiori to perform music by the contemporaneous medieval mystic and healer Hildegard of Bingen – one of the great medical authorities of her day – in celebration of Schweitzer, surgeon & physician. We feature soprano Judit Felszeghy in some of Hildegard’s most inspired and transcendental compositions . And we explore the medieval musical world further with guest player Daniel Sarafini on a rare Billingsgate trumpet, to evoke medieval London. Other instruments in the programme include, cornetto, hurdy-gurdy, sagbutt, baroque trumpet & violin.

Part of Fiori Musicali’s summer series 2025 – Biber ‘Rosary’ Sonatas
The Bohemian composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber flourished at the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg in the late 17th century. Around 1676 he composed fifteen so-called Mystery or Rosary sonatas as musical meditations on the mysteries of the rosary. These survive in a single manuscript dedicated to the Archbishop and were probably performed in Salzburg Cathedral during October (the Rosary month).
The word ‘rosary’ derives from the Latin rosarium or ‘rose garden’ and in Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam is a practice of reciting a series of prayers, using a string of beads to remember the order.
These striking instrumental sonatas are particularly interesting as none has a title but each one is preceded by an etching depicting one of the fifteen mysteries. The first sonata, The Annunciation is distinguished from all the others in that the violin is played in its normal tuning. All the other sonatas require scordatura (or ‘mistuning’ of the instrument!)
It was fashionable during the 17th and 18th centuries to have fanciful titles for musical collections. Amongst such titles are the ‘Wohgepflazter Lustgarten’ (the well-planted pleasure garden), the ‘Hortus Chelicus’(the garden of the lyre), and of course the name Fiori Musicali (originally a collection by Frescobaldi) means musical flowers. These rare musical collections provide the inspiration for a fascinating series of concerts, beginning is the tiny church at Edgcote, where charismatic German violinist Kerstin Linder-Dewan performs some of Biber’s famous ‘Rosary sonatas’ – an oblique tribute to the rose. Other flowers appear too in this programme in the guise of music by the Scottish baroque composer James Oswald. And no garden would be complete without the birds, represented by recorder player and flautist Heidi Fardell.

Fiori’s answer to Glastonbury! A fabulous midsummer concert in the uniquely atmospheric setting of Wolfhampcote – a place that time has forgotten…
As St Peter’s Wolfhampcote begins its ambitious project to install specially commissioned stained glass windows- including one by distinguished stain glass artist Thomas Denny – into this special (but nowadays largely deserted) church, the transcendent voices of the Fiori Musicali Choir will be adding their musical commentary with glorious music celebrating the 500th anniversary of the great Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina.
Fiori mark this major anniversary with a concert devoted to beautiful choral works by Palestrina, the most celebrated choral composer of the Italian late renaissance, and one of the greatest musical luminaries of the 16th century.
Even before William the Conqueror invaded Britain in 1066, right up to the present, there has always been a church standing on this site. Palestrina wrote his gloriously uplifting Missa Papae Marcelli (his most famous work) to honour Pope Marcellus II, who reigned for just 3 weeks in 1555. So a mid-16th century mass setting fits pretty well halfway through this special church’s long history.
The splendid Missa Papae Marcelli is notable for its transparent texture, such that the listener can always pick out the ancient words of the mass, even though Palestrina dresses them up in elaborate music. This musical clarity makes it an ideal piece to mark the installation of Wolfhampcote’s new windows. And, as the concert takes place on St Peter’s Day (the church’s Patronal Festival), Fiori open the evening with Palestrina’s joyous motet for St Petertide, Tu es Petrus (Thou art Peter).

The Castle Ashby Concert
part of Fiori Musicali’s summer series 2025 – Hortus Musicus – the musical garden.
The romantic Italian gardens at Castle Ashby with their topiary and orangery are the inspiration for our popular midsummer concert in the idyllic church at Castle.
The nightingale makes a passing appearance in the the music of Italian early baroque composer Merula. Flute and recorder represent other members of the feathered world and Uccellini’s Sinfonie Boscarecie is a nod to the arboretum and parkland of this heavenly venue. Brandenburg too had wonderful baroque gardens, so JS Bach must make an appearance. And an intriguing alternative portrayal of Summer from the Four Seasons captures the time of year – not by Vivaldi this time, but by his rarely heard Italian contemporary Giovanni Guido.
Telemann – Violin concerto in A Imitiert die Reelinge
Merula – La lusignuola (the nightingale)
Uccellini – Sinfonie Boscarecie no.34 ‘Gran Battaglia’

TRUMPET IN THE GARDEN
part of Fiori Musicali’s summer series 2025 – Hortus Musicus – the musical garden
An opportunity to visit the wonderful Northamptonshire gardens at Coton Manor.
The 17th-century court at Kromĕříž in Moravia was known for its fine gardens and first-rate musicians – including much admired court trumpeters. Today the palace library holds quantities of trumpet music (some surviving only in the archives there!) which will resound again in an alfresco feast of Moravian baroque music.
And what about a picnic tea beforehand? You can book a ‘Best of British Hamper’ or ‘Vegetarian Hamper’ prepared by Zest Catering (or even bring your own) and enjoy these glorious gardens – a colourful backdrop for the occasion. Gates open at 3pm.

HAYDN THERESIENMESSE
To wrap up Fiori’s Hortus Musicus series, the full quota of Fiori musicians will be at Fotheringhay (Mary Queen of Scots country). But it isn’t the Stuart Queen we celebrate. Instead we honour an Empress – Maria Theresa – whose baroque gardens at Schönbrunn (the main summer residence of the Hapsburg rulers) were an impressive symbol of imperial power. So for our grand finale we perform Haydn’s Theresienmesse – a splendidly regal tribute to the ‘musical garden’ replete with vocal soloists, choir and chamber orchestra. (With an aside to Mozart in arias from his youthful opera La finta giardiniera).
Fiori’s popular high summer concert in this iconic Northamptonshire church.
